Our first reader-submitted cabin
Our faithful follower J.P.P. lives in this cabin outside Sharon, CT. It was built in the 1840’s near Pigeon Roost, NC and relocated to its current site in the 1970’s by an ornithologist of some note. It is constructed with first-generation chestnut and some tulip poplar, and originally used as a sharecropper’s dwelling.
My favorite detail: The chimney is built with stones collected from 30 different countries, a lifetime project for one of its previous, and apparently nomadic, owners.

Researching : Japanese Boro Fabrics
Boro means “Ragged” in Japanese.
Similar to early American patchwork quilts, these Japanese futon covers were made of fabric scraps worked together to create a stronger, heavier material.
Indigo was the most prominent dye used at the time and as a result the quilts are mostly seen in a range of pale to saturated blues in a wide variety of patterns.
‘Shashiko’ stitching is used to mimic weaving and add durability. (And it looks amazing). To read more about boro and other Japanese folk textiles.- try this link . Pretty neat stuff.
